welcome to the fold...

It's official. I have rejoined the workforce with a vengeance. London Lite in hand, I now cram myself in to silly tube spaces for far too long and pay good money for bad coffee.

After an emotional few weeks of weepy goodbyes and frosty hellos, Iris is now a fully fledged member of the childminded brigade. "Yes, yes, off you go mummy (or dada as she calls us both out of convenience), but first, a little snot on your suit for good luck, mmwaaah".

As of this week I am a full-time employee, and part-time mum. I'm not sure it's ideal, but then, what is?

there is no 'ideal', just varying shades of boredom, dissatisfaction and / or guilt. Just think of the money! (that's what those of us who don't work think of. And we crave the time crammed into a train. And the need to put on lipstick and use an adult brain. And not endlessly folding washing or thinking about what to make for tea. you see, your side of the fence is looking pretty good now, isn't it?!

you're absolutely right - it is so much easier going to work - once out the door, the world is your oyster (well, sort of) for about 10 hours. And if you make it past the gate without snot on your dress, you get to stay that way until 6.30pm.

I've been broke and at home and am now solvent and working full time. I sleep better now the money worries are over, but miss the house full of silly children after school, the rota for ballet/climbing/gym drop-off; the jogging in the park and the chats at the school gates.
I don't put on lipstick but I am enjoying being part of an adult team again.
It's all compromise.

Hi M&T - nice to meet you!

Well, it was going ok although work doesn't seem to fit into a 4 day week, and has spilled over into 'home' time, and Iris now loves her dad more than me..oh and the childminder has just given her notice as she has decided book-keeping is more up her street, so from a promising start I seem to have taken a bit of a detour from success. hmmm. How was your week?

I'm totally with you NMIT. My little girl is going through the clingy phase whereby she clutches onto me for dear life when we get to nursery and she has to be prized off kicking and screaming in a frenzy of snot and tears. Not a good way to start your working day! I sit there at work feeling sick with worry, but her carers all say that the minute I've left she jumps down from their arms and trots off to boss her 'boyfriend' around!

Hello New Mum.. I did this too, just a month before you did,and it hasn't worked out exactly as planned... I'm currently re-thinking in holiday-time and trying to work out exactly how the hell anyone ever balances anything. Anyway, I shall read more with interest!
